Météo : beau temps chaud.

- Le début d'étape est animé par Rolf Wolfshohl qui attaque au départ puis au km 10. Ses tentatives sont vaines, par contre Ignolin part au km 26. Il est poursuivi par Neri, Vandenberghe, Polidori, Maliepaard & Minieri qui creuseront un écart est de 30" avec le peloton qui revient sur eux un peu plus loin. Au km 32, l'ancien maillot jaune Van Neste, tombé la veille, abandonne.
- Dans l'ascension du col, Georges Chappe sort du peloton et s'en va pour une longue échappée solitaire. Au col de Vars (km 52), Chappe est en tête, à 2' Jimenez, Aranzabal & Vicentini, à 2'05" la tête du peloton. Le "Bleuet" ne se désunit pas et accroît son capital : 5'40" puis 13'05" au pied du col d'Allos. Derrière, dans les pentes d'Allos, Lucien Aimar attaque et Mariano Diaz se lance à sa poursuite. Au sommet (km 102), Chappe est en tête, à 8'45" Aimar, à 9'50" Diaz, à 11'40" Jimenez et le reste.
- Au km 138, au bas de la descente, Diaz revient sur Aimar mais ce tandem est repris au km 157 par le peloton. Ils seront restés intercalés pendant 62 km. A 25 km de l'arrivée à Digne, Foucher, Schutz et Samyn s'extirpent du peloton et se lancent à la poursuite de Chappe toujours devant mais qui faiblit nettement. L'infortuné est repris dans les faubourgs de Digne, à 6 km du but ! José Samyn, le benjamin du peloton, s'impose nettement devant Foucher son co-équipier et le Luxembourgeois Schutz. Chappe est juste derrière.
Pas mal de chutes ont émaillé cette étape : Van Springel, Spuhler, Harings, Wolfshohl...
Roger Pingeon a passé une journée relativement tranquille avec la présence d'Aimar à l'avant. Il conserve le maillot jaune avant la "descente" demain sur Marseille.
