- Départ lent, il ne se passe rien jusqu'au km 25. La côte de Méracq (km 25) est escaladée au train. Raymond passe en tête devant Grain, Schleck et tout le peloton. Au km 30, treize coureurs dont Poulidor tentent sans succès de s'échapper. Au km 70, Milliot sort du peloton mais Stablinski le contrôle. Les deux Nordistes sont repris. On note encore des essais infructueux : au km 128, Samyn et Brands avec encore Stablinski dans le sillage, puis Basso, Garcia & Poggiali accompagnés de Foucher et Genet.
- Peu avant le ravitaillement de Bazas (km 143.5), 21 coureurs dont Basso, Haast, Garcia, Stablinski et Foucher prennent jusqu'à 25" d'avance mais tout rentre dans l'ordre. Le peloton reste très agité et enfin, au km 156, la bonne échappée prend forme, 7 hommes se dégagent : Basso, Brands, Dalla Bona, Izier, Aranzabal, Stablinski & Foucher. Ils sont rejoints par 9 autres coureurs et ce groupe possède 1'20" au km 170. Stablinski se laisse décrocher pour renforcer la poursuite de l'équipe de France mais l'écart s'accroît néanmoins et passe à 2'40".
- Frans Brands lance le sprint mais Basso remonte et coiffe tout le monde. Vandenberghe prend la 2ème place. Le peloton arrive avec 3'24" de retard.
Roger Pingeon conserve le maillot jaune.
